FIFA Renames MetLife Stadium With Dumbest Title Imaginable For 2026 World Cup Final
FIFA has officially announced that MetLife Stadium, home to the New York Giants and Jets, will play host to the FIFA World Cup Final in 2026. The announcement came as a bit of a surprise, with many predicting AT&T Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys, to get awarded the final, but instead, all eyes will be on New Jersey, er, New York for what will be the most-watched soccer game of 2026.
While MetLife getting the honor of hosting the final was a shock to the system, what isn't a shock is that FIFA is requiring all host stadiums to ‘re-name’ themselves.
FIFA doesn't allow non-FIFA sponsors to have branding displayed anywhere, and given that just about every venue in North America has a brand attached to it, soccer's governing body has had to get busy coming up with new names.
FIFA didn't exactly go the creative route on this front.
Mercedes-Benz Stadium will be known as Atlanta Stadium for the 2026 World Cup. Gillette Stadium will be referred to as Boston Stadium. AT&T Stadium will be called Dallas Stadium, and so on and so forth, you get the gist.
There is one, let's say unique, re-name in the bunch, and it belongs to MetLife Stadium, which will be referred to as New York New Jersey Stadium.
Let me repeat that again, for emphasis's sake. The 2026 FIFA World Cup Final will be played in a stadium called NEW YORK NEW JERSEY STADIUM.
You can hear it now in dozens of different languages, announcers from across the globe introducing the game saying ‘Welcome to the greatest sporting event in the world, the World Cup final at New York New Jersey Stadium.'
Do you know who is to blame for this clown show? The NFL.
It's nobody's fault but the league's that we have not one, but two NFL franchises who claim to be New York's team, yet play in an entirely different state. FIFA is simply playing along with this charade the league has been portraying for decades.
I will say that if I were one of those rare New Jersey natives who is actually proud to call the state home, I'd be livid that ‘New York’ was the first state listed instead of ‘New Jersey’ when it comes to the make-believe 'New York New Jersey Stadium. Then again, you have to see where FIFA is coming from, it wants the final tied to New York, not New Jersey.
