Evander Holyfield Chased By Overzealous Fan In L.A., Cops Respond
Evander Holyfield had a bad run-in with an over-eager fan in Southern California last month, and the police got involved.
The legendary boxer was doing a meet and greet in Duarte (a city in Los Angeles County) on April 27. Just after the event ended, a fan approached Holyfield with memorabilia for him to sign. Holyfield refused, as the man was given a signed 8x10 photo instead. Oftentimes, celebrities limit the items they will autograph at events like these because they don't want fans to turn around and sell the memorabilia for profit.
But the fan didn't like that very much. So he began to follow the former undisputed champ on foot and then chased him in his car.
With the guy still on their tail, Holyfield's team called the police, who met them on the side of the street to ensure the boxer's safety. Once the coast was clear, Holyfield was on his way.
No suspects in the case have been named.
The 61-year-old Holyfield officially retired from professional boxing in 2014 (his last fight was in 2011) as one of the most decorated heavyweights of all time. He reigned as the undisputed champion at cruiserweight in the late 1980s and at heavyweight in the early 1990s. Holyfield is the only boxer in history to win the undisputed championship in two weight classes in the "three-belt era."
But he's perhaps best known for his pair of wins over Mike Tyson in the 1990s — and for Tyson biting off part of his ear in the second bout.
