Rece Davis Is Taking Absolutely No Chances With The Sports Gambling Regulators This Time
Last week, Rece Davis found himself in hot water when he jokingly referred to Erin Dolan's betting advice as "risk-free investing." But he's not going to make that mistake again.
In a segment on Sunday morning, Davis was joined by ESPN Bet's Tyler Fulghum to get his picks for the men's Elite 8 match-ups. But before Fulghum could share his best bets, Davis gave a long and detailed intro that definitely could not be construed as an endorsement of irresponsible gambling.
"[Tyler Fulghum] is here to give you some well-researched information — purely for entertainment purposes, perhaps just to enjoy some time with family and friends. Maybe you bet M&Ms?" Davis began.
"But remember, only wager the number and color of M&Ms that you have set aside as your play M&Ms. It's nothing more than that because this information is for exhibition purposes only and is not an actual part of the competition. So please, no wagering."
This intro was a hilarious nod to the controversy Davis accidentally kicked up last week.
Last Sunday, Erin Dolan gave out her pick for the second-round match-up between No. 9 Northwestern and No. 1 UConn: Northwestern to score under 60.5 points. After she handed out the advice, Davis essentially guaranteed that Dolan's pick was correct and even encouraged people to plop down a large sum of money because it's free money.
"Some would call this wagering, gambling; the way you've sold this, I think what it is, is a risk-free investment," Davis said.

Obviously, he was joking. But regulators take responsible gaming VERY seriously, and the fact that ESPN has its own sportsbook made Davis' comments even more problematic.
Not surprisingly, he issued an apology just a couple of hours later.
For what it's worth, Dolan's under bet did hit.
As for this Sunday's picks, Fulghum likes Duke (-6.5) to cover vs. N.C. State and under 147.5 points in the Tennessee-Purdue game. OutKick founder Clay Travis is taking Tennessee (+3.5) to cover vs. Purdue and under 142.5 points for Duke and NC State.
So, you know, throw down however many M&Ms you see fit. Or don't.
