England Stuns Slovakia With Stoppage Time Equalizer, Extra Time Goal At European Championship
Slovakia was about three minutes away from arguably the greatest result in the history of its international soccer program. But England scored an incredible stoppage-time goal to force the match into extra time.
Slovakia improbably made its way out of the group stage at the European Championships thanks to an opening match victory over Belgium.
However, they ran into one of the great powerhouses in international soccer in the Round of 16, England.
The English entered the second stage of the tournament as the favorites to win it all, and the heavy favorites to cruise past Slovakia. The Slovaks were +800 to beat England in regulation.
But that's exactly what appeared to be the case. Twenty-five minutes into the match, Slovakia struck first.
They held that lead all the way through the first 90 minutes of the match, entering stoppage time with a 1-0 lead. England was down to its last few rushes to try and tie the game.
And somehow, they pulled it off.
That sent the match into extra time. After needing over 95 minutes to score its first goal of the match, England wasted no time getting its second less than one minute into the additional 30 minutes.
Complete elation for the English and their fans, who seemed resigned to the idea that the team had just suffered an inexplicable loss to end its 2024 European Championship run.
But then utter devasation set in for Slovakia. Not only did they allow the game-tying goal in the final moments, but they immediately conceded the game-winner in the first minute of extra time.
To those who don't watch much soccer – which used to include me until I discovered the fun of betting on it – this European Championship is a terrific introduction.
Some of the matches have been incredibly entertaining, and we can add England's win over Slovakia to that list.
