Disgraced NBA Player Jontay Porter Barred From Playing Overseas

NBA player Jontay Porter, 24, will not be allowed to play basketball overseas after a judge blocked his request amid his illegal betting scandal.

It's another major roadblock for Porter, the now-infamous hooper caught betting on NBA games, prompting the league to drop the ban-hammer on him.

This week, a federal judge, Judge LaShann DeArcy Hall, struck down Porter and his legal team's request to restore his passport privileges to play basketball for the Greek club, Promitheas BC.

Porter's schemes included exiting games early under the guise of a ‘medical reason’ to hit on his player prop bets. As previously reported by OutKick betting expert Geoff Clark, "The NBA is looking into Porter’s unusual activity, betting and otherwise, in a January 26 game against the Los Angeles Clippers and a March 20 game against the Sacramento Kings. Porter left both games early with injuries."

In June, Porter pleaded guilty to a federal conspiracy crime related to his illegal gambling activity and awaits his sentencing, scheduled for December 15.

According to a statement from Porter's attorney via Daily Mail, Porter's lawyer requested permission, knowing it was a diminishing opportunity for the player to spend time with his family.

The attorney's letter read:

"The proposed modification would allow Mr. Porter to pursue a very fortunate — and quickly diminishing — opportunity to earn income through his primary skillset," Jensen wrote.

"Mr. Porter, and more importantly his agent, believe such an opportunity is unlikely to arise again. …

"Since being banned from the NBA, there have been no other opportunities available to continue his basketball career. Mr. Porter has a limited window to earn an income through professional basketball during his prime earning years as a professional athlete."

Porter started in five games for the Toronto Raptors last season. He averaged 4.4 points, 3.2 rebounds and 2.3 assists throughout 26 games.

Porter is also the brother of Denver Nuggets champion Michael Porter, Jr.
