Dick Vitale, MLB Players and Fans All Agree: All-Star Game Jerseys Stunk!

For the most part, last night's Major League Baseball All-Star Game was a resounding success.

A Shohei Ohtani 3-run home run bomb, newly certified stud pitcher Paul Skenes showcasing his 100+ mph fastball, a close 5-3 American League victory, Olivia Dunne… everyone was able to enjoy something during last night's game.

Fans were also able to all come together and agree: the jerseys stunk.

MLB DEBUTED ANNUAL NEW ASG UNIFORMS IN 2021

Everyone from Dick Vitale to current Philadelphia Phillies All-Star Bryce Harper didn't hold back their thoughts about this year's light brown, vibrant red and blue American League uniforms or the black and vibrant blue National League ones; the ASG was easier to take in when players were wearing their own team jerseys.

"I would prefer the players in the All Star Game to wear these special uniforms for pregame  batting practice and then, for the game, wear their respective TEAM UNIFORM!" legendary college basketball commentator Dick Vitale exclaimed on his social media. Vitale wasn't done yet - later in the night he would tweet out, damn near pleading with MLB to "Oh, please let the players WEAR THEIR TERM UNIFORMS!"

Phillies first baseman and eight-time All-Star Bryce Harper has played in both the traditional ASG uniforms and whatever-the-heck these were this year and he agrees. "If we could change back to that [and have All-Stars take the field in their team uniforms] I think it would be really cool," Harper told reporters.

NEW JERSEYS ARE HARD TO IDENTIFY PLAYERS

Growing up, when the camera would pan around the field or the dugout and I saw a St. Louis Cardinal or a Baltimore Orioles player, I would immediately know that it was Ozzie Smith or Cal Ripken Jr. Not to mention the short, plump Kirby Puckett showcasing that Minnesota Twins jersey!

Last night? I found myself having to wait till the players turned around in some instances to see who they were (especially as the later innings rolled in and the main ASG starters were all out) and when my buddies asked what team so-and-so played for, it honestly took me - someone who covers many MLB stories for OutKick, a minute to try and remember.

That's not what a sport that is desperately struggling to bring in a younger audience, who also does a terrible job of elevating the players they do have to a mainstream level (Besides Ohtani, Judge and Harper) should be proud of.

Baseball is built on traditionalism. The league has already made plenty of changes - some that the players and fans want, others they don't - but one thing that both parties agree on is that neither want the cash-grab All-Star Game jerseys… Leave the multiple uniforms to the NBA.
