DeVonta Smith Leaning On His Faith Amid Contract Extension Talk With Eagles

Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver DeVonta Smith is eligible for a contract extension this off-season ahead of what will be his fourth season in the NFL. While plenty of players and agents often get consumed with details and hammering out a deal as quickly as possible, Smith isn't going down that path.

The former Heisman Trophy winner is simply leaning on his faith while being confident that things will fall into place as they should.

"It’s all in God’s hands," Smith told the Philadelphia Inquirer. "At the end of the day, extension or not, I’m going to have to come in and do what I have to do. It’s God’s timing, so he’s going to put me in the right place at the right time."

Smith signed a four-year deal worth just over $20.1 million after the Eagles drafted him with the 10th overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. His salary in 2024 is $1.05 million, but is worthy of a deal worth many millions more whenever his new contract comes to life. His new deal will come together sooner rather than later, and in his mind it'll come at the exact moment it's supposed to.

For any Philly fans who may attempt to connect the dots of his nonchalantness translating to him being unhappy as an Eagle, he made it clear that he loves playing in Philadelphia.

"It’s been amazing. I love playing in Philly," Smith explained. "I don’t think there’s a better sports city in the U.S. I think Philly is top-tier. Any sport, they’re dialed in, that’s what I love about it. I love that we all support each other. Basketball comes to football, football comes to basketball and baseball, we all support each other."

Smith's 2023 numbers took a slight hit compared to what he produced in 2022, but he still managed to have 1,066 receiving yards and seven touchdowns on 81 receptions. The former Alabama star played in 16 games this past season after suiting up in all 17 in his first two years in the NFL.
