Desperate For A Pro Football Team, St. Louis Is Dominating UFL In Attendance
It's been nine years since the Rams played their last season in St. Louis. And without an NFL team, the city has had to resort to drastic measures — like watching the UFL.
The St. Louis Battlehawks are dominating the United Football League in attendance, and it's not even close. Through three home games, the Battlehawks are drawing an average attendance of 35,014. Meanwhile, non-St. Louis teams are averaging 10,145 fans per game through five weeks.
And Week 6 is off to a rough start, with the Birmingham Stallions and Memphis Showboats putting only 5,609 butts in seats on Saturday.
So what is different about St. Louis?
Well, it helps that the team is good. The 5-1 Battlehawks have won five-straight games and currently hold the top spot in the XFL Conference.
But maybe the city just really loves football, and they enjoy having a pro team to rally behind.
In 1960, St. Louis brought the (football) Cardinals from Chicago. After the Cardinals left for Arizona in 1988, St. Louis got the Rams to come to Missouri in 1995. Then, after 20 years and lots of shady behavior from ownership, the Rams went back to L.A. — leaving The Lou high and dry.
Could another NFL club make its way to St. Louis in the future? Perhaps.
But with a UFL team drawing the same attendance as a weekend (baseball) Cardinals game at Busch Stadium, one thing is certain: St. Louis fans love football. And they'll take it any way they can get it.
