Amazing Putt Helps Davis Thompson Smoke Field At John Deere Classic With Historic -28, Earn British Open Spot

Davis Thompson earned his first career PGA Tour win Sunday, and he did so in historic fashion.

After four rounds of golf, Thompson finished with a final score of -28, which was surprisingly just four shots above the next closest finishers (Michael Thorbjornsen, C.T. Pan and Luke Clanton all tied for second). In doing so, he broke the previous record Michael Kim set in 2018 by just one stroke.

Not a bad way to get your first win on the tour!

Heading into today’s final round, the 25-year-old had posted a -21 score. While he certainly was in excellent form for the entire weekend, sinking this 44-foot shot on the first hole of Sunday’s action was a tell-tale sign that he was destined to win.

The fact that he sank birdies on five of his first six holes to record a 29 on the front nine didn’t hurt either.

After sinking his final putt of the day, Thompson’s emotions overcame him as he embraced his wife, Holly Grace.

"I just tried to stay present all day and when that putt finally went in, it was a big sigh of relief," Thompson said.

The best part of his victory is that it automatically earned him one of the final spots in the upcoming British Open, which will start in two weeks. It will be his first start at this major event and just the fifth of his major career.

What a day for Thompson!
