Dan Patrick Tells OutKick's Dan Dakich Why Jerry West's Death Hit Him So Hard

Sports media legend Dan Patrick, whose career took off at ESPN before he left to host his own show on NBC, really took the death of legendary former NBA player Jerry West hard.

Patrick joined OutKick's Dan Dakich to talk about his great admiration for West, a.k.a. "The Logo," in an interview that will air in its entirety Thursday morning on OutKick at 9:40 a.m. ET.

"My dad, I remember he would point out certain athletes and say, ‘you want to pattern your game… like that. That guy plays the game the right way,’" Patrick told Dakich.

He went on to add that Jerry West was one of those guys that his father admired because West played the game hard. Patrick also loved West's athleticism and that he played the game differently than others back in the day.

"Jerry came [into the NBA in] 1960 and he's shooting jumpers. Everybody else is shooting set shots. And I just remember the athleticism that he had that stood out from others."

Patrick talked about his relationship with West over the years, how West would come on his radio show and how he cared for him. But the connection between the two men ran deeper for Patrick, especially considering the proximity to Father's Day.

"Every time I would see him, I would see my dad," Patrick said. "My dad died at a young age, 54… They were similar ages, and my dad and Jerry West look similar… So I felt like I buried my dad again today."

Dan began his sports media career at ESPN, where he survived for nearly a decade. Once the Stockholm Syndrome cleared, he made his way to OutKick. He is secure enough in his masculinity to admit he is a cat-enthusiast with three cats, one of which is named "Brady" because his wife wishes she were married to Tom instead of him.
