Chicago Cubs Reliever Fractures Hand After Hellish Outing Against Angels
Colten Brewer — right-handed reliever for the Chicago Cubs — struggled with (self) control during Saturday's game against the LA Angels, punched a wall in the Cubs' dugout, and now faces a prolonged stint on the IL after fracturing his left hand.
But what else can we expect from this season's Cubs?
Cubs RHP Brewer Fractures Left Hand After Punching Dugout Wall
The Cubs placed Brewer on the 60-day IL, announced Sunday. He suffered a miserable outing against the lowly Angels, after hitting a batter and giving up three runs (one earned), two hits and two walks. Brewer entered the game in the third inning with the Cubs facing a 2-0 deficit. The pitcher exploded after being removed early by manager Craig Counsell, who is leading a disappointing first-year campaign in Chicago after a successful tenure in Milwaukee.
Brewer's performance put Chicago down 5-0, and Los Angeles shut out the Cubs 7-0.
Brewer spoke about his unfortunate injury talking to reports on Sunday.
"My intention wasn't to break my hand," Brewer shared with the media. The 31-year-old expressed his remorse over Saturday's flare-up at Wrigley Field.
Brewer added, "I'll get frustrated and make mistakes. That's no excuse. There's a lot I can prove out there, that I'm willing not to do stuff like that. Emotions get the best of us sometimes."
The online chatter about Brewer's broken hand led to some interesting theories. Cubs fans on X called the punch a ‘business savvy’ move by Brewer, anticipating a DFA if not for his broken hand otherwise. Sadly, not even an upgraded Brewer can salvage the Chicago Cubs' declining season.
Chicago remains cemented at the bottom of the NL Central at 42-49.
