Could NASCAR Champ Face Prison Time If Series Goes To Mexico Next Season?
The NASCAR rumor mill is working overtime this week in regard to the 2025 schedule, which is expected to be released in the coming months.
Back in the day, nobody cared, because they went to the same 30 or so tracks, on the same 30 or so weeks, every single year.
But that's back when NASCAR was thriving and could do no wrong. Nowadays, they have to push the limits just to get folks to watch, and that means trying out some new spots.
Anyway, one of those rumored places is Mexico. There's been speculation the Cup Series could head south of the border (thanks, Biden!) to race next season, which in itself would be interesting.
But beyond that, what really intrigues me is Kyle Busch possibly getting cuffed and detained the second he crosses into Mexican airspace.
Wait, what?
That's right! For those who forgot, Kyle Busch – you know, the two-time NASCAR champ – was nearly thrown in a Mexican prison last January for bringing a gun into the country whilst vacationing with wife Samantha (an OutKick OG), and I'm not sure that situation ever resolved itself.
I mean, last I heard was Kyle was facing three years in jail for his crime. Seriously! They're built different down there, you know.
So, if NASCAR does go to Mexico next season … can Kyle Busch go? Does he have the nuts?!
Kyle Busch may have a tough decision to make if NASCAR goes to Mexico
There's Sam Busch! You didn't think you'd get through this without our NASCAR Queen making a cameo, did you?
That above picture came from their trip to Mexico in Jan. 2023, and that's where things all went south for the NASCAR champ.
He crossed the border on his fancy plane with a gun in his bag – smart, frankly – and forgot about it until he went to check in for his flight back to the US of A.
Well, the fellas in Mexican TSA didn't like what they found, and detained him. According to Mexican authorities, the 38-year-old had a .380-caliber gun in his bag, along with six hollow point cartridges.
Not great! Badass, but not great. Dale Sr. would've been proud.
Anyway, the Public Ministry of the Attorney General of the Republic in Quintana Roo (say that 10 times in a row) obtained a conviction of three years and six months in prison and a fine of 20,748 pesos ($1,082 U.S. dollars) against Busch for the charge.
"I have a valid concealed carry permit from my local authority and adhere to all handgun laws, but I made a mistake by forgetting it was in my bag," Busch said at the time.
And that's … the last we heard of it!
In all seriousness, I imagine it's been taken care of. After all, Kyle has plenty of money and that usually gets you out of anything.
But … it is a question worth asking, right? If NASCAR goes to Mexico next season, can Kyle Busch make the trip?
No clue, but buddy, I'm praying we find out.
PS: at least we know Kyle will more than hold his own in prison:
