Company Behind Kissable F1 Trophy Cooked Up A Wearable Trophy For Chinese Grand Prix
The Chinese Grand Prix is back on the Formula 1 calendar for the first time since 2019, and when the race winner (let's face it, probably Max Verstappen) takes his place on the top step of the podium, he'll be given a very unique trophy: the first one in the sport's history that can be worn.
Sure, some races give out prizes you can wear. The Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona dishes out — what else? — Rolex watches.
But this is a bonafide trophy modeled after a laurel wreath that athletes have received at various times over the years, crossed with some Chinese Year of the Dragon touches.
That beauty of a trophy has censors in it and when the winner drapes it around his neck it'll light up.
Computer company Lenovo — which also happens to the the title sponsor of this year's Chinese Grand Prix — teamed up with design firm Pininfarina to create this and that shouldn't be a surprise because this isn't the first time that Lenovo tried to push the boundaries of trophy technology.
Last season, Lenovo was behind another innovative trophy that was given out to the winner of the Japanese Grand Prix, which just so happened to be Verstappen.
That trophy — which was not used for the 2024 Japanese Grand Prix two weeks ago — was designed to light up in the colors of the winner's home country's flag when kissed,
As it turns out, it worked pretty well.
This is pretty cool, and it makes a lot of sense that a tech company would want to use technology to gussy up their trophies.
However, they can gussy them up all they want, but for my money, they will never top the sweet, sweet King Kong-looking trophies that the winner of the French Grand Prix used to get.
Now those were trophies.
