Commanders Punter Got Fleeced In Jersey Number Deal With Jayden Daniels

I love a good jersey transaction where one player gets a little something to cough up his number, but I don't recall a deal as lopsided as the one Washington Commanders draft pick Jayden Daniels cut with the team's punter Tress Way.

Daniels wore No. 5 at LSU, and apparently, he wanted to keep it. The only problem is that's Way's number and has been since he joined the team in 2014.

Alright, Jayden. Welcome to the show. If you want your old college number you've got to pony up for it. That's just how it is.

Way found himself in the better bargaining position, so what did he ask for?

A Rolex? A custom pool table? Ooh, I know; how about a jet ski?

Nope.

I mean… Tress, my guy, I think you left some things on the table.

Believe me, tickets to an Oklahoma-LSU game are cool, although it killed me that Schefter said that will go to a game "presumably with good seats," which leads me to believe that wasn't even part of the deal.

Way may have given up his number for seats with obstructed sightlines, and only after he retires. He's only 33 and a punter! He's got some gas left in the tank.

He couldn't even get a case of beer to sweeten the deal?

I understand not wanting to take advantage of a guy on a rookie deal, but these are modern rookies coming out of school with money in the bank thanks to any number of NIL deals. They can pony up for a set of golf clubs.

Truth be told, I'm sure Tress Way is just a nice guy and it's cool of Jayden Daniels to hook up his family, but this could be the most lop-sided jersey number trade in history.

I mean, this is like the Edmonton Oilers trading Taylor Hill to the Devils for Adam Larsson one-for-one.
