Colombian Soccer Federation President Ramón Jesurún And His Son Arrested After Copa América Final

Perhaps the craziest development to come from last night’s Copa América victory is that the president of Colombia’s soccer governing body and his son were arrested.

To be fair, there were plenty of crazy things that happened at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami that could have won this prize, not the least of which was an extra-time winner by Argentina to win the title.

But Ramón Jesurún getting arrested definitely takes the cake.

Jesurún (who is 71-years-old) is the president of the Colombian Football Federation, and a vice president with CONMEBOL, the organization that puts on Copa América. Last night, he and his son were trying to enter Hard Rock Stadium, but were prevented from doing so by security.

Basically, what happened is Jesurún and his son, Ramón Jamil Jesurún (43), were both trying to get past security guards that were blocking a group of civilians. The officers were doing this because they needed to block the entrance to a tunnel that led to where media members gathered after the match ended.

Here’s what Local 10’s Chris Gothner reported on what happened afterwards:

"Both father and son ‘became irate’ at a guard and began ‘shouting’ at him, police said. The arrest report states the altercation became physical after a security guard asked the men, ‘yelling in (the guard’s) face,’ to step back and placed a palm on the younger Jesurún’s chest to ‘guide him back.’

That led the elder Jesurún to step forward and push the guard, police said. His son then followed up by grabbing the guard’s neck and punching him, according to police."

Here’s a video of the incident, obtained by Fox Sports Mexico.

Dang, that’s tense.

The father is now facing three felony counts of battery on a specified official or employee, and no bonds have currently been set for either man. They were scheduled to appear in Miami-Dade bond court this afternoon.

Getting arrested or seeing your team lose the final of a major tournament would be awful. Having both happen within hours of each other? That's a night they'll want to forget.
