Coaches Foolishly Slam Texas Quarterback Quinn Ewers

Some coaches decided it was a good idea to trash Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers.

Ewers has become the face of Texas football since joining the team prior to the 2022 season after spending his redshirt freshman season at Ohio State.

The former five-star and top-ranked QB recruit-turned-Longhorns-passer led the program to the College Football Playoff last season after winning the Big 12. Texas is as back as it's ever been since the late 2000s.

A lot of that has to do with Ewers' steady command of Steve Sarkisian's offense and his leadership. He's viewed as a top 2025 NFL Draft prospect and Texas will be one of the best teams in America this season. Yet, some coaches don't think he's that good.

Below are quotes about Ewers from unnamed coaches, including some identified as Big 12 coaches, given to The Athletic:

  • "I’m not that high on him. Overhyped. He has a good arm, and he did have a lot of talent around him, but you just see a bunch of stuff where you wonder what he’s doing out there."
  • "I’m very curious to watch him this year. The last two years he had superstars around him. There’s some ‘Oh My God!’ throws on film that he made against Alabama, but he was just so inconsistent. I think he’s about average athletically."
  • "I do think he’s come a long way from 2022. There was too much of the (Patrick) Mahomes comparisons around him coming into college. He does have a good arm, but he’s not anywhere near as athletic nor the playmaker Mahomes is, or has that kind of presence. It’s kind of a strange deal because people want to talk about that, about what he was supposed to be, or they want to talk about Arch Manning behind him. But that isn’t the kid’s fault."
  • "I think he’s just still trying to figure things out. Sark (Steve Sarkisian) does such a good job of setting things up for him, and so you’ll see times where he’ll rip it, but then there are other times, he just seems to be a little timid."

Anonymous coaches weigh in on Quinn Ewers

The first two comments above are the ones that really stick out to me. Describing Quinn Ewers as "overhyped" and "average athletically" are some *VERY* bold words.

The Texas star QB threw for 3,479 yards, had 22 passing touchdowns to six interceptions and tacked on another five rushing TDs. Not only did he put up very impressive numbers, but he also missed two games due to an injury.

He averaged nearly 300 passing yards a game. What are these coaches talking about? Overhyped? Average athletically? Quinn Ewers led Texas to the CFP and is among the more athletic QBs in the country.

This is textbook bulletin board material, and the worst part is chunks of it aren't even accurate. While his 2022 season was a bit rougher than expected, his 2023 campaign was incredibly solid.

I would have "overhyped" and "average athletically" printed out and blown up in the locker room. He could have dreamed up better bulletin board material ahead of Texas' first season in the SEC. Do you agree with my breakdown of Ewers? Let me know at David.Hookstead@outkick.com.
