CBS Will Have A Doink Cam For Super Bowl LVIII If You're Into That Kind Of Thing...And We All Know You Are
I love a good gimmicky camera. Slap a camera on a player's helmet, a referee's hat, or, hell, even the mascot, I'll eat it up. I'm a complete sucker that way, and CBS must know that there are others like me because for Super Bowl LVIII its unveiling a new camera that if you're playing the odds, won't even see any action.
Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the era of the Doink Cam.
According to Yahoo Sports, CBS is stuffing six cameras in the goalposts at Allegiant Field in hopes of capturing angles of field goals and extra points that no one has ever seen… or wanted, if we're being totally honest.
However, as far as gimmicky cameras go, this is a good one.
Now, where could they have gotten the idea? Well, it was at State Farm Stadium, and it came the moment Harrison Butker doinked a 42-yarder against the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LVII.
Some CBS sports executives were watching and thought, "Doink Cam."
"We both looked at each other at the same time and said, ‘Oh my God!'" CBS Sports’ vice president of Remote Technical Operations, Jason Cohen said.
The equipment was tested twice this year — once during the preseason and once during the regular season — so it is Super Bowl-ready. That's a good thing because the last thing anyone wants to see is a potential game-deciding field goal muffed because of some sort of Doink Cam mishap.
Can you imagine the excitement if a doink gets captured on camera like this? It'd be like catching a Great White shark giving birth or something like that but with doinks. The only way it could be more exciting is if you bet on whether or not there would be a doink and it hits.
However, according to CBS Sports executive producer and EVP, this Doink Cam is about more than doinks.
"It’s all about the storytelling," Bryant said. "We’re not going to force in the elements. We’re going to find out what works to help tell the story of the game, the story of the moment."
Meh, pretty sure it's just about doinks.
