Caitlin Clark Records Historic Triple-Double, Goes Deep In Her Bag In Huge Win Against WNBA-Best Liberty

Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark had herself a historic day against the New York Liberty, recording the first triple-double by a rookie in WNBA history.

Earlier Saturday afternoon, the Fever were facing off against the WNBA-leading Liberty (17-3). Indiana is ranked eighth (8-13), barely in the playoff picture if the postseason started today.

But Clark must’ve woken up this morning and been like, "Ya know what? I still feel dangerous."

Now we have no way of actually confirming that, but after Clark recorded 19 points, 13 rebounds, and 12 assists, we can safely assume she was exuding confidence.

Clark wasted no time getting going. On her very first shot of the game, she launched up a three from the parking lot of the Gainbridge Fieldhouse and converted for her first points of the game.

You might be thinking that’s par for the course for her. Catch the ball off a screen, quickly find some space, and shoot. Big deal, she’s done that seemingly millions of times.

Well, she showed she’s more than a one-trick pony as the half wore on.

Later on in the first quarter, she busted out some pretty sweet ball-handling moves on her way to the paint. Then she hit Liberty guard Courtney Vandersloot with a shimmy, and sunk a turn-around jumper from 12 feet away. 

I know that might not seem that hard, but it is. Go in your backyard, have your friend put a hand in your face, and try to convert a shot while falling away from the basket. You’ll see what I mean.

Not too long after that, Vandersloot was guarding Clark again (poor thing), and the Fever guard showed no mercy. After a behind-the-back dribble and a step back, Clark drilled another three.

In the first half alone, she had 13 points on 5-10 shooting. Not a bad way to start a game against the best team in the league. 

And with this rebound in the fourth quarter, she made not just WNBA history, but Fever history as well. She is the first Indiana player to record a triple-double, and she did it in her 22nd game, no less (a nice poetic touch).

Eventually, the Fever would post an incredible comeback and hold on for a 83-78 win. Indiana got its first win against the Liberty (this was their fourth matchup) and now sit at 9-13.

Without question, this is the best day in Clark's young WNBA career.
