Brock Purdy Just Wants To Win, Isn't Getting Caught Up In Contract 'Nonsense'

The 2024 NFL season is a mightily important one for Brock Purdy. Not only will he be tasked to take yet another step in the right direction between years two and three in the NFL - something many young quarterbacks struggle with - but he'll also be playing for what could be a ginormous pay raise and contract extension.

The former Iowa State product is entering year three of his four-year rookie contract and will be making a salary of $985,000 this season. Next year that number increases to $1.1 million, and for a quarterback who does a lot more winning than losing, those numbers don't come close to representing his true value in the NFL market.

While most 24-year-olds would let talks of a contract extension and large payday consume some of their thoughts, Purdy isn't like other 24-year-olds. While he's well aware of the contract situation that could present itself sooner rather than later, he thinks that piece of the equation is "nonsense."

All Mr. Irrelevant is focused on improving and getting back to the Super Bowl.

"I'm trying to win this year and do everything I can for this organization this year," he said. "Everything else happens how it happens. But for me, I need to get better from last year on the film and the things that I saw from last year. In my rookie year, I've got this thing in me where it's like, I want to continue to master my craft and that's that.

"So, it's a business obviously, too. But for me, I love this game. I love just competing with these guys in this organization. I love this organization and I want to continue to represent myself for them and in the right way. So that's where I'm at with that. Getting too caught up in all that kind of stuff is for me, that's nonsense."

Plenty of players in a similar situation have delivered similar messages over the years, but with Purdy, it comes across as genuine.

As the last pick of the 2022 NFL Draft understands the concept of nothing being given and everything earned. Purdy is also aware that the only thing he can control is his play on the field, and that play will do the talking at the negotiation table whenever that day comes.

Purdy has won 17 of his 21 regular season starts since taking over for the 49ers in 2022. A season ago, he was in the league MVP conversation until late in the campaign before leading San Francisco to a Super Bowl birth.
