Brewers, Red Sox Matchup Features Heated Bench-Clearing Scene After Pitcher, Coach Dispute
Sunday's game between the Red Sox and Brewers featured seventh-inning, bench-clearing action after a pitcher and coach got tangled up in a dispute.
Red Sox pitcher Chris Martin had words for Brewers first base coach Quintin Berry, setting off a heated altercation. In the footage, Berry looked incensed based on something Chris Martin uttered under his breath. The Boston pitcher plainly admitted that he may have thrown unsavory comments.
Players from both dugouts poured in, and the two sides were separated, with (surprisingly) no punches thrown.
WATCH:
Martin said after the game that the Brewers' two bunt attempts in the seventh inspired him to mumble some pointed comments at Milwaukee, which Berry caught before deciding to bark back at the pitcher.
"I probably said some things under my breath," Martin admitted.
"That was kind of directed at that inning. I'll let you all determine what those things were. Heat of the moment," he added. "They bunted twice. You see there they bunted there at the end of the game. I didn't like it. I know it's part of the game. ... I let 'em know. In this league, swing the bat."
Boston got the last laugh, winning 2-1 with a Jarren Duran RBI single in the eighth inning.
Brewers manager Pat Murphy addressed the heated scene after Milwaukee's loss. Milwaukee's skipper indirectly said Martin needlessly got mad at the Brewers' bats.
"I think their pitcher showed some emotion and I think our people thought it was directed at them," Murphy said.
He added, "I don't know if it really was or it wasn't. I'm not going to speculate what the kid was doing. But if you're staring at somebody and you're saying it, it could be interpreted that you're saying it at them."
