Brent Venables' Second Statement About Cale Gundy Leaving Oklahoma Includes New, Important Detail

Oklahoma head football coach Brent Venables has released a second statement regarding assistant coach Cale Gundy leaving the program. The latest statement from Venables about Gundy's departure includes two words that paint a bit clearer picture of the situation.

Gundy, the assistant head coach and wide receivers coach, announced late Sunday night that he was resigning from the program because of a word he said during a film session.

“I want to be very clear: the words I read aloud from that screen were not my words," Gundy's statement read in part. "What I said was not malicious; it wasn’t even intentional. Still, I am mature enough to know that the word I said was shameful and hurtful, no matter my intentions. The unfortunate reality is that someone in my position can cause harm without ever meaning to do so.”

Less than 15 minutes after Gundy shared his statement on social media, Venables released a statement of his own through Oklahoma's official Twitter account. Venables' original statement did not mention anything about the word, or words, Gundy said in the film session.

On Monday afternoon, about 16 hours after his original statement, Venables released his second statement about the situation. This time around, he specifically cited that Gundy said a "racially charged word." Not only that, but Venables said that Gundy said the word not once, but multiple times.

"Coach Gundy resigned from the program because he knows what he did was wrong. He chose to read aloud to his players, not once but multiple times, a racially charged word that is objectionable to everyone, and does not reflect the attitude and values of our university or our football program. This is not acceptable. Period," the second statement read in part.

Venables explaining Gundy read the word "multiple times" is certainly a noteworthy detail in the situation.
