Tyler O'Neill Leaves With Bloodied Face After Boston Red Sox Teammates Brutally Clash

Boston Red Sox left fielder Tyler O'Neill exited Monday's game against the Cleveland Guardians after a brutal clash with teammate Rafael Devers.

The players ran after a pop fly in the eighth inning, which ended up in Devers' glove, but saw some turbulence when O'Neill came in sprinting. O'Neill and Devers appeared to call for the ball, neither easing off.

Devers' head appeared to make contact with the front of O'Neill's face, causing a nasty clash for both players. O'Neill and Devers went airborne from the collision, and the players grimaced in pain on the grass.

Blood trickled down O'Neill's face from the impact with Devers, and Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora ran over to assist his players.

O'Neill left with a towel on his face as blood trickled down. The gash on O'Neill's forehead required eight stitches. O'Neill braces for the concussion protocol after the mean smack to the head. Devers will also enter the concussion protocol despite feeling ‘fine’ according to the skip. Devers was coming off a three-game absence from a shoulder injury.

"He has a big gash here," Cora said regarding O'Neill after the contest.

The Red Sox suffered an all-around terrible day, losing 6-0.

"[O'Neill] got eight stitches. He's going through the concussion protocol, hopefully everything's fine." Cora added.

Red Sox pitcher Kutter Crawford gave his thoughts on the vicious hit.

"As any ballplayer on the field, I think that’s the worst play in baseball," Crawford said, via MLB.com.

"You’ve got the infielder running back on a blooper and you’ve got the outfielder running in hard on the blooper. It's tough to watch. You don't want to see two of your teammates lying on the ground. It’s tough to watch and it’s just one of the worst plays that can happen in baseball."

O'Neill made headlines on Opening Day for the Red Sox after hitting a home run, which extended his Opening Day home run hitting streak to five straight.

Speedy Recoveries!
