Bomani Jones Says NFL Teams Only Care About One Thing When It Comes To Backup QBs: Skin Color

A funny thing happens once a person starts seeing life only through the racial lens: he can't unsee it. Once that person decides that everything in life revolves around human skin color, there's no going back. Take Bomani Jones, for example.

I don't like giving Jones the time of day because he routinely makes the most ridiculous comments. If I decided to write about everything he said, it would be a full-time job. I'm not sure anyone could pay me enough to take that job. 

Sometimes, though, you just have to laugh. The most recent commentary revolves around the NFL and backup quarterbacks. According to Bomani Jones, NFL teams have one rule when it comes to backup quarterbacks: no white backup quarterbacks for black starters. 

Why? Because NFL fans are racist. If a team has a white backup for a black starter, then racist fans will demand that the team swap out the black player for the white player. Yes, he really said this. 

I'm not going to say "he really believes this." He might, but we cannot be certain. If Bomani Jones is as smart as Bomani Jones thinks Bomani Jones is, he cannot possibly believe this. 

"The Browns continued what they've been doing, which is signing every black backup quarterback they can find," Jones begins. "The new blackup is Jameis Winston because you gotta put him behind Deshaun Watson's nasty ass to stop the fans from asking for something else." 

Quick note: that's not a typo or a Freudian slip. Jones actually said "blackup" which is a term he believes he coined to explain this genius phenomenon he came up with.

But there's more! According to Jones, we now know exactly how the NFL Draft is going to go – at least for the first three picks. He says that the New England Patriots would never have signed Jacoby Brissett to be their backup quarterback unless they knew the starter was going to be black. 

Thus, Jones believes that the Bears are going to draft Caleb Williams, the Commanders are going to draft Drake Maye and the Patriots plan to take Jayden Daniels. 

This theory is exactly why the Raiders don't want Justin Fields, by the way. It's not because Fields stinks, no, no, no. That can't be it. It's because he's black. 

According to Bomani Jones, new Raiders head coach Antonio Pierce wants Justin Fields because he's the best quarterback Las Vegas can get. However, Pierce cannot trade for Fields because then they would have a black head coach and a black quarterback and racism would destroy the team. 

Seriously, listen: 

I don't blame you if you chose not to actually listen to the Bomani Jones clip. In your position, I might have done the same thing. 

However, I hope you did. There's no comedy quite like unintended comedy. Bomani Jones knows that what he's saying is funny. But, it's not funny for the reasons he believes. 

He thinks that he's comedically exposing the racism of white NFL fans. In reality, the comedy lies within Jones exposing his own racism. 

And we can all laugh at that.
