Bob Huggins Wants To Be Hired By Major Program, But Odds Aren't In His Favor
Bob Huggins wants a shot at the Louisville job, but he might be setting himself up for a lot of disappointment.
Huggins was pushed out the door by West Virginia prior to this season after an arrest for allegedly driving under the influence. His arrest came shortly after he found himself in hot water with WVU leadership over using a homophobic slur during a radio interview.
The back-to-back problems were simply too much for Huggins to survive with the Mountaineers. He recently expressed interest in possibly returning to Morgantown for his old job. That's not going to happen, and he has a new target.
The Louisville Cardinals.
Bob Huggins thinks he's perfect for Louisville job.
"I would be really excited to be there. I would want to be and do what Coach (Denny) Crum did. I've always had a love for Louisville, believe it or not. I love going to Louisville and playing. I love the fan base, the way they embrace the team, the way they embrace Louisville basketball," Huggins said Wednesday morning on Jerry Eaves Sports Radio, according to SI.com.
He further added, "I think it's a great place. I think it's something that fits me perfectly. Much like Cincinnati did when I got to Cincinnati. I mean Cincinnati was in dire straits when I got there and the city of Cincinnati fell in love with what we did, the way we played, who we played. We weren't afraid. We weren't afraid to play anybody. And I think the people that we brought in to Cincinnati to play were people that ended up being NBA All Stars and I think they appreciated the fact that we didn't hide from anybody. We were gonna play whoever it was. Line them up and let’s go play. And I think that's the mentality that Louisville people would like to see."
There's just one problem for Bob Huggins. Louisville reportedly is closing in on a deal with College of Charleston’s Pat Kelsey, according to Jeff Goodman. The deal isn't done yet, but is moving forward.
That means Huggins practically begging for a shot with the Cardinals is going to fall on deaf ears. The reality of the situation is that Huggins' days of coaching at a premier program are likely behind him.
Could he land a smaller job just because of who he is and his historical success? Sure, but it seems unlikely a major school - Louisville or otherwise - takes a shot at him given his exit from WVU.
