Birmingham-Southern Is Shutting Down, But Its Baseball Team Is Headed To College World Series
The wildest story in college baseball is not at a powerhouse school in the SEC or ACC. No, it's Birmingham-Southern, which is closing its doors as a school next Friday, but its baseball team is headed to the College World Series.
Yes, you read that right. Birmingham-Southern is shutting down its school, but there's one big problem with the whole situation, and it involves the baseball team. The Panthers were fighting to keep their season alive just a few weeks ago, but thanks to one of the wildest runs this season, Birmingham-Southern is headed to the Division III College World Series.
So a school that will no longer exist next week will have its baseball team playing in one of the biggest sporting events of the early summer. You can't make this stuff up. Sure they will still be wearing the school's colors, but these guys will not have a place to call home after the season ends.
This is what makes this story so incredible, but the baseball squad decided to add another layer to the wild season on Saturday.
According to a report, the baseball team was hit with food poisoning this morning, with nine players puking their guts up, with one player needing to go to the hospital for fluids. So entering what might have been the final game of their season, Birmingham-Southern defied the odds and once again wrote another chapter to this incredible run.
Go-FundMe Launched For Birmingham-Southern Postseason Run
Just to add to the craziness of this entire situation, the Birmingham-Southern Panthers also had a Go Fund-Me launched to help with expenses for this postseason run.
"Help support Birmingham-Southern baseball in its historic final season! BSC is steps away from the college World Series. All funds will be used for travel expenses and championship rings. Any remaining funds will go to BSC baseball staff to help in their next steps. Yeah Panthers! Forward, ever. Always. Let’s win the whole damn thing!," the website read.
The Panthers defeated Denison University on Saturday to advance to the Division III College Baseball World Series, which also comes with a twist.
Call it some kind of weird karma, but the school closes its doors on May 31st, which is the same day the baseball team will play in Eastlake, Ohio for a national championship.
