Beyonce's Mom Fires Back At Charles Barkley For His Dig At Galveston
Over the weekend, Charles Barkley ripped the city of Galveston, Texas, for its "dirty-ass water." But not everyone appreciated those comments — including Tina Knowles, Beyoncé's mom.
It all started on Saturday when the New Orleans Pelicans went down 3-0 to the Oklahoma City Thunder in the first round of the Western Conference playoffs. The Pelicans played so poorly that Barkley said they weren't even worthy of spending their off-season in Cancun.
"I'm disappointed in New Orleans," Shaquille O'Neal said on the NBA on TNT post-game show. "Where they going, Chuck?"
"Galveston," Barkley responded. "That dirty-ass water. We're not even going to send them to Cancun. We're sending them to Galveston, where that dirty-ass water be washing up on the shore and people think they're at the beach."
Enter Knowles, who was born in Galveston. Beyoncé's mom posted the clip on Instagram along with a light-hearted warning for Barkley.
"Chuck we don’t play about Galveston Texas ! You better watch it sucker!" she wrote. "Our water might not be blue , but it is still the beach and we love it! In fact , what you probably don’t Know is It’s an Island !! Yes me and @angiebeyince still rock our BOI necklaces ( Born On The Island). Jay sent this to me and Angie B Yesterday ! He asked us if we’re gonna let him talk about our city like that! All Good @charleswbarkley we got a great laugh. So yal don’t start no S___T."
So it was all in good fun. But just in case, Barkley issued an apology to Ms. Knowles and stated he didn't want any beef with her or her son-in-law, rapper Jay-Z.
"Ms. Knowles: I don’t want that smoke," he said on Sunday's show. "I don’t want the Beehive and Jay after Chuck. Just know that I apologize."
He hasn't changed his mind, though. When co-host Ernie Johnson asked how he liked Galveston now, Chuck immediately responded, "We're not going there."
"Oh hell no," he said. "That water's so dirty there, I’d rather go to San Antonio. I’d rather go to San Antonio with them big ol' women."
In other words, the state of Texas isn't hiring Charles Barkley to write its tourism pamphlets anytime soon.
