Braves' Chadwick Tromp Is About To Sell More Jerseys Than Any Backup Catcher Ever
Chadwick Tromp saw an opportunity, and he took it.
The 29-year-old catcher was called up to the Atlanta Braves on Saturday after Sean Murphy hit the 10-day injured list with a strained left oblique muscle. And immediately after the Braves selected Tromp's contract, he changed his jersey number from 48 to 45.
Does this seem strangely reminiscent of a certain former president?
Whether purposeful or accidental, it's a hilarious move by Chadwick. He might be the backup catcher, but he's going to sell more jerseys than anyone else on the team.
Tromp was scratched from the Triple-A Gwinnett Stripers’ starting lineup on Friday. Originally debuting for the San Francisco Giants in 2020, the Aruba native has made multiple appearances on the Braves' 40-man roster since the organization acquired him in 2021. But he has spent most of his time in the minors.
Tromp last saw MLB action in May 2023. Last year, he totaled just 16 plate appearances and recorded two hits. In his career, Tromp is hitting .222 with five career home runs in just under 100 at-bats.
Travis d’Arnaud will see the bulk of playing time with Murphy out. It is unclear how much time the Braves expect Murphy to miss, but reports say that 10-day IL stint is looking more like a month.
Until then, it's Tromp 2024.
But don't expect Chadwick to change his number again if Donald Trump wins the election. No. 47 is retired by the Braves as a tribute to two-time Cy Young winner Tom Glavine.
