Astros' Jose Altuve Ejected From Game After Snapping at Umpire
Houston Astros second baseman Jose Altuve threw a temper tantrum and was booted from Sunday's game against the Mets at Citi Field.
Altuve's outburst might've been justified based on the missed call by the umps and the momentum shift it produced in the eighth inning.
With two runners in scoring position and two outs in the seventh, Altuve stepped up to the at-bat and worked himself to a 1-1 count before fouling a ball off his foot, which jumped to third base for New York's Mark Vientos to scoop and throw to first.
What was supposed to be a 1-2 count instead resulted in the Astros' third out — Altuve argued that the ball fouled off his foot. He finally blew a fuse after the officiating crew's decision called the play an out, ending the inning and Houston's favorable position to pad their lead.
The 5-foot-7 Altuve slammed his bat and helmet on the ground with home plate umpire James Jean nearby, who caught the outburst and booted Altuve.
WATCH:
The call worked in the Mets' favor after they scored two runs in the eighth inning, tying up the game at 4-4. Things were tight heading into the ninth, but the game was hit by a rain delay as storm-like conditions arrived in Flushing. Action resumed with a scoreless ninth but Houston ultimately won, 10-5, after scoring five runs in extra innings.
