AHL's Cleveland Monsters Reunite Woman With Fan Who Saved Her Son From Flying Puck
Whenever I go to a hockey game — whether that's at an NHL barn or I'm sitting in the crowd for a men's league game — I always take inventory of where I'm sitting and where the safety nets are.
I always keep my eyes on the game, but that's especially true if you're sitting somewhere where the puck could deflect into the crowd.
According to ABC News 5, a woman in Cleveland named Asia Davis and her son Nasir can vouch for this when a puck careened their way during an American Hockey League game last week.
It happened at a Cleveland Monsters game at Rocket Mortgage Field House against the Laval Rocket. A routine play led to the puck getting tipped into the crowd just behind the Monsters' bench.
Fortunately, the man sitting next to them put his arm out to block the puck and gave it to Nasir as a souvenir too.
Davis posted the video of the incident on TikTok in hopes of thanking the man and it racked up thousands of views and also caught the attention of the Monsters, a team that is owned by Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert and is the AHL affiliate of the Columbus Blue Jackets.
She also got a message from the man, whose name is Andrew Podolak.
"I went to sleep, and when I woke up around 10 o'clock in the morning, I had a DM from him, and it just said, 'Everything happens for a reason. I'm glad the little man is OK.' I looked at his profile, and I was like, this is him!" Davis said.
Over the weekend, the Monsters did their part to reunite Davis, her son, and Podolak, and they got to drop the puck ahead of another matchup between the Monsters and Laval.
Just an awesome story all around, and a great reminder of why you need to keep your focus on the action when you hit up a hockey game.
