25-Year-Old Norwegian Cyclist Killed On Tour Of Austria

A cyclist has been killed in a tragic crash during the fourth stage of the Tour Of Austria.

Norwegian cyclist Andre Drege, 25, died Saturday during the fourth stage of this year's race. According to the BBC, Drege died during the five-day race's fourth stage. This stage runs from St. Johann Alpendorf to Kals and features a section where riders have to descend the Grossglockner — Austria's largest mountain — and it was there that Drege sustained fatal injuries.

"It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we have to announce the passing of André Drege," race organizers said. "On Saturday 6th July, following a very serious crash during the descent of the Großglockner at stage 4 of the Tour of Austria, André crashed and sustained severe injuries."

According to Cycling News, the podium ceremony following the stage was canceled. It has yet to be decided whether or not they will go ahead with the race's fifth and final stage which is scheduled for Sunday and runs from Kufstein to Kühtai.

He had been a member of the Norwegian team Coop-Repsol since 2021. He had won seven races this year and was set to jump to the World Tour level with the team Jayco-AlUla in 2025.

"We are devastated by the tragic passing of André Drege," Coop-Repsol wrote on social media.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with André’s family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time. André’s family has requested privacy as they mourn their loss, and we kindly ask that their wishes are respected."

After this news broke there was an outpouring of tributes and condolences from around the cycling world.

It's such a tragedy to lose a rider who clearly had a bright future ahead of him.
