Mets Pitcher Luis Severino Is Talking Trash With The Yankees Before The subway Series And I'm Here For It

We’re at the point in the year when the sports news cycle is kinda slow. While baseball is certainly fun (heck, it's my favorite sport), sometimes it’s easy for the buzz surrounding MLB to fade, especially during the dog days of summer.

But fortunately, the New York Mets and New York Yankees are doing all they can to change that for us.

The two teams will clash in the Subway Series on Tuesday and Wednesday night at Yankees Stadium. These squads need no extra motivation to win these games; they are both currently in playoff positions and strongly dislike each other because of their proximity.

But Met pitcher, and former Yankee, Luis Severino has just stoked the fire.

Evidently, Severino is still in a texting group chat with some of his Bronx Bombers buddies (alliteration is awesome, amirite?). Naturally, the Yankees were talking some smack with their ol’ pal on Friday before their upcoming series.

The right-hander didn’t pitch in the last subway Series, since manager Carlos Mendoza opted for two lefty pitchers. He won’t pitch in this week’s matchup either, as Mendoza is opting for Jose Quintana and Sean Manaea (both lefties). As such, the Yankees taunted Severino by saying he was afraid to face them.

According to local media, Severino did not just sit back and take a verbal beating. He dished out his own insult, telling every Yankee in the chat that "Right now you only have two good hitters," referring to Aaron Judge and Juan Soto.

Frankly, Severino isn’t wrong. Judge and Soto are the only two regulars in the Yankees lineup with a batting average above .300, and only three total above .250. And they’re worse against lefties, which is why Mendoza is opting for Southpaws to start the games.

"For some reason, the Yankees are not too good against lefties this year. You only have to walk Judge and after that it will be better," Severino added.

This can only mean one of two things for the upcoming series. Either the Yankees’ lineup will look like steaming garbage on a Brooklyn sidewalk, or they will all channel their inner Babe Ruth and make the Mets pitchers look absolutely ridiculous. There’s no in between

Mendoza, a former Yankees coach, did not stoke the fire anymore on Saturday.

"I know, obviously, the way it came out, but look: I know that lineup," Mendoza said. "I know those guys well and that is a deep lineup there."

He could be right, but Severino could be right too. We’ll have to wait for the mid-week action to see which version of the Yankees lineup we get.

Either way, it should be some great baseball in the Big Apple.
