Olympic Hammer Thrower Gwen Berry Turns Her Back On US Flag During National Anthem

United States Olympic hammer thrower Gwen Berry came in third during the U.S. Olympic trials, leading her to get a brozne medal.

Berry though made headlines not for her efforts, but for what she did after during the medal ceremony.

The thrower turned her back on US flag during national anthem and says it was 'disrespectful' and 'a setup' to play the song while she took bronze medal.

Berry placed her left hand on her hip and appeared to be restless. She took a quarter turn, so she was facing the stands, not the flag.

Close to the end of the anthem, she picked up her black T-shirt with the words 'Activist Athlete' on the front, and put it over her head.

'I feel like it was a set-up, and they did it on purpose,' said Berry. 'I was pissed, to be honest.'

'They had enough opportunities to play the national anthem before we got up there,' she said. 'I was thinking about what I should do. Eventually I stayed there and I swayed, I put my shirt over my head. It was real disrespectful.'

A schedule at the event in Eugene, Oregon showed that the anthem was played every day.

'We're thrilled with the women's hammer throw team that selected themselves for the Games,' spokeswoman Susan Hazzard said in a statement.
