Seattle Kraken Are Being Vetted For Outdoor NHL Game
The NHL's newest franchise, the Seattle Kraken, may not have played a game at their home rink yet, but there could be plans forming for the team to host a different kind of event.
KING 5's Chris Daniels reports that Gary Bettman said Friday Seattle is “on the radar” for an outdoor game while speaking at the Climate Pledge Arena opening event — the Kraken will host the Vancouver Canucks Saturday night for the first home game in franchise history.
The Vegas Golden Knights — the second newest expansion team — had to wait a few years before gracing the outdoor circuit. The Golden Knights battled the Colorado Avalanche at the first “NHL Outdoors at Lake Tahoe” game earlier this year but the event didn’t according to plan once the sun came out and started making playing conditions dangerous, Yardbarker reports.
The 32 outdoor NHL games have been hosted by football venues, baseball parks, a golf course and a soccer stadium in the past.
The schedule currently has three outdoor games confirmed — Jan. 1 in Minneapolis as the Wild will host the Blues at the Winter Classic; Feb. 26 in Nashville, where the Predators will host the Lightning in the Stadium Series; and March 13 in Hamilton when the Sabres will host the Maple Leafs in the Heritage Classic.
While the Lake Tahoe outdoor event shine may have dulled the experience for some, Yardbarker reports that players, coaches and team staff are always amazed at the experience and speak about how unforgettable it is.
"The events have also been successful financial hits for the league, both in-person and via broadcast," Yardbarker writes. "While Seattle is just getting its feet wet in the NHL, you can bet the Kraken will be on the outdoor lineup before long."
The Kraken (1-3-1) host the Vancouver Canucks (2-2-1) on Saturday at 10 p.m. ET before matching up against the Montréal Canadiens on Tuesday.
