Washington Football Team Close To Hiring Marty Hurney As New GM

Coming off a season in which they won the NFC East despite being under .500, the Washington Football Team is set to hire a new general manager.

Reports say the team is bringing in veteran NFL front office man Marty Hurney, an experienced voice who will provide support for Ron Rivera.

The two, Rivera and Hurney, know each other quite well from their time with the Carolina Panthers.

Hurney has been back and forth with the Panthers. Though he's been canned twice, he has spent about five seasons overall with the Panthers. The 65-year-old first hired Rivera as Panthers head coach in 2011 and then spent one more year there before being fired. He came back to the Panthers in 2017 as an interim general manager and was on the job until the team released him of his duties back in December.

Sources say that, despite Hurney's arrival, Rivera will still retain power and call all the football shots.

In his time with the Panthers, Hurney was tasked with managing the salary cap. However, he probably will have little say in that department in Washington, as the team has already brought in former assistant from Carolina, Rob Rogers, to take care of the cap.

Hurney wasn't the only candidate for the Washington GM position. The team also spoke to former Detroit general manager Martin Mayhew, Tennessee's vice president of player personnel Ryan Cowden and Washington's director of pro personnel Eric Stokes.
