Video: Cowboys Bettors Screwed on Ben DiNucci Fumble that Gave Eagles the Cover

In the fourth quarter of an excruciating game between the Eagles and Cowboys, Dallas quarterback Ben DiNucci fumbled on a sack by T. J. Edwards, and the ball appeared to be recovered by Philadelphia defensive end Vinny Curry. Then, the ball trickled out, and Eagles safety Rodney McLeod scooped it and scored.

In my opinion -- and in the opinion of Al Michaels and Cris Collinsworth -- Curry had possession of the ball on the ground long enough to be ruled down. Even if he didn't, they didn't review this play for long enough.

The NFL officiating account can say whatever they want about how there was not clear evidence, and maybe that would've been the conclusion upon review, but Jerome Boger's crew did not look at the play long enough to determine that. The review before the Eagles attempted the extra point did not take nearly enough time. We know how long these reviews can last when they analyze granular details of plays. This was a case of the crew deciding upon fast review that they did not need a formal one, which was the wrong decision even though a closer examination would have prolonged an already unwatchable game.

The Eagles were also lined up offsides on the play, but that part is not reviewable.

It would've been possible -- if highly unlikely -- for the Cowboys to win this game if the play had been called correctly. It was a one-possession game, and Dallas would have needed a stop and a touchdown. What was far likelier, however, is that the Cowboys would've covered the 10-point spread if the Eagles were not awarded a touchdown on this play. Dallas bettors are justifiably furious.
