Trey Lance, QB Competition Making Jimmy G And 49ers Better

If you've been keeping up with the training camp footage that's been released on rookie quarterback Trey Lance, you can't help but feel for veteran 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo. He's slowly watching his starting role with the team slip from his grasp like a wet football.

Whether drafting the rookie with the No. 3 pick was designed to light a fire under Jimmy G. or pivot the direction of the offense entirely, the 49ers and GM John Lynch have been enthused about the tense QB competition that has since begun.

"Jimmy's a big-time competitor, and we haven't played a game yet, but in practice in the offseason and practice in training camp thus far, he's playing his best football since he's been here, and he's played a lot of good football. Just look at his record," said Lynch.

He added, " really is playing at a high level, and I don't want to talk about it too much — as I'm doing so in front of millions of people — but it's something everyone's recognizing. He's really playing at a high level, and that's the type of competitor (he is), that's what competitors do. When they're challenged, they rise to the occasion, and I think he's doing a great job of that."

As analysts and fantasy football aficionados try to predict the QB pecking order in San Francisco, Lynch has considered all possibilities involving both QBs.

"People say, 'Well, what do you do if they're both playing great?' That's another great problem to have. And we'll deal with that when it comes."

While Garoppolo is still slated to take on the starter role in Week 1, the fan base is impatient for the moment when their true franchise QB takes over. All eyes on Lance.
