Titans Sign Veteran RB Adrian Peterson

UPDATE (3:00 p.m.): The Titans have signed veteran running back Adrian Peterson to their practice squad, per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

With Titans running back Derrick Henry potentially out for the season with a foot injury, Tennessee is making a quick pivot on his replacement.

Per CBS Sports' Josina Anderson, the Titans worked out free agent running back Adrian Peterson on Monday. Peterson, 36, last played in the NFL last season with the Lions. In 16 games and 10 starts, Peterson rushed for 604 yards on 156 carries and seven touchdowns. Peterson is only three seasons removed from a 1,000-yard season with Washington in 2018.

Peterson is fifth on the all-time rushing list, with 14,280 yards over his 15-year career. He notably ran for 2,097 yards in 2012, only duplicated by seven others in NFL history. Henry looked poised to become the first two-time member of that list before the injury.

Tennessee's other backfield options include Jeremy McNichols and Dontrell Hilliard. McNichols was a fifth round pick out of Boise State in 2017, bouncing around a few teams before landing with Tennessee in 2020. In 24 games with the Titans, McNichols has rushed for 242 yards on 54 carries and one touchdown. Hilliard has just 22 career carries, none with the Titans.

Peterson will not likely be the bell cow he once was, but rather a complement to two inexperienced running backs. The Titans currently sit at 6-2, first place in the AFC South.
