Three Teams That Should Trade For Jets DT Quinnen Williams
The back-and-forth trade rumors surrounding second-year defensive tackle Quinnen Williams are enough to make us dizzy. First, it was reported that the New York Jets are attempting to shop the Alabama product. Then more reports claimed that he is not being shopped actively, but that the New York Jets might entertain offers for him. It is tough to know the truth.
For what it is worth, New York should not even consider trading the 22-year-old star defensive tackle. After a rough rookie season, Williams is finally becoming the player the Jets thought he could be when they selected him as the No. 3 overall draft pick back in 2019. He has shown growth and disrupted many of his opponents' offensive strategies.
General manager Joe Douglas will ultimately make the decision whether to keep him. If he listens to some of their offers, it is possible one team will offer enough to get something done. However, Douglas will demand more than the reported second-round pick, so interested teams should come prepared with leverage.
Who are some of these teams? Who should actively pursue Williams before the Nov. 3 trade deadline? We have identified three teams who should consider making a move:
1. Dallas Cowboys
The Dallas Cowboys are still technically in the running for a playoff spot. Despite their 2-5 record, they're only one game out of first place in the NFC East. Injuries have hit this team hard, but they shouldn't give up on the season yet.
But even if they do, Williams may still be their answer. Whether the Cowboys make one more push in 2020 or they secure a key building block for the future, the 6-foot-3, 303-pound interior defensive lineman would fit in well in Dallas. He fills a major void on the roster, and he's a high-character guy who would gel with the locker room.
Would Jerry Jones be willing to pull the trigger? If the price is right, absolutely.
2. Green Bay Packers
The Green Bay Packers also make sense for Williams. They currently sit atop the leaderboard in the NFC North, and a young, blossoming defensive presence could help get them over the top.
When the Packers took quarterback Jordan Love and running back A.J. Dillon in the first two rounds of the 2020 NFL Draft, fans were disappointed. They believed that the front office should've worked to put more talent around Aaron Rodgers so that the team could win now, not just at some point in the future.
The former Alabama defensive tackle may not be a receiver, but he would still help with that "win-now" mode.
Adding Williams would also give Green Bay one of the best young interior tandems in the league. He would pair up with former first-round pick Kenny Clark, who is also under 26 years old.
3. Las Vegas Raiders
The Las Vegas Raiders are coming off a rough 45-20 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday, but they are still 3-3 and in the running for a Wildcard playoff spot. Williams would be a quality addition to help the Raiders make that push.
General manager Mike Mayock and head coach Jon Gruden have done a nice job bringing in top-notch offensive building blocks. Two of Williams' former teammates, running back Josh Jacobs and wide receiver Henry Ruggs III, are included on that side of the football.
The defense still lacks star power, however. The team recently brought in former Cowboys defensive lineman David Irving, but Williams would take that unit to a new level. Clelin Ferrell, Maurice Hurst and Williams would be a lot of fun to watch.
