Texans Focused On Lovie Smith And Josh McCown For David Culley's New Staff

The last head coach opening in the NFL was filled late on Wednesday, as the Houston Texans hired Baltimore Ravens assistant David Culley to be the team's new voice moving forward.

The 65-year-old Culley has plenty of NFL experience. He just wrapped up his 27th season as a coach in the NFL.

The curious thing about the hire is that Culley was the Ravens passing game coordinator - a unit that finished last in the NFL in 2020. He must have blown away the Texans front office with his interview, as they clearly didn't care much about the ranking of Culley's unit this past season.

Now Culley is going to have to find coaches to fill his staff, and NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reports that the Texans are focused on Josh McCown and Lovie Smith as possible assistant coaches.

McCown interviewed back on January 22nd for the Texans head coaching spot, but it looks like now that he will be an assistant under Culley.

Smith is best known for his eight seasons as head coach of the Chicago Bears, and he will be expected to revamp a defense that was terrible last season. They blew a number of games, including the season finale against the Titans.

The team is expected to keep Tim Kelly as offensive coordinator.
