Speculation Surrounding Super Bowl WR and Massive Patriot Payday Surfaces
Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are gearing up for Super Bowl LV. His former team, the New England Patriots, are not. There could be a little revenge from Bill Belichick made in the offseason, though.
Earlier this week, Bill Barnwell with ESPN had an interesting piece predicting the landing spots for this year's crop of free agent wide receivers. What better way to get back at Brady for his 2020 run than stealing away one of his top pass-catching options?
Barnwell predicted the Patriots will sign upcoming free agent Chris Godwin to a four-year, $78 million contract. His reasoning? The number of high-profile free agents on the Tampa Bay roster and the limitations of the salary cap.
Godwin would be a big loss for Tampa Bay, and a major get for New England.
Godwin's first season in the league as a third-round pick was decent. As a rotational, depth piece, he racked up 34 catches for 842 yards and a touchdown. Since then, he's only gotten better. In 42 regular season games, he's brought in 210 catches for 3,015 yards and 23 scores.
Considering how poorly the Patriots' receivers have played, Godwin would be an excellent addition for whoever ends up starting at quarterback. Plus, it would be a small "got ya" shot at Brady, for whatever that's worth.
