Someone Named Tim Boyle Is Starting At QB For The Lions This Week

With quarterback Jared Goff out due to injury, the Detroit Lions are set to have backup quarterback Tim Boyle under center as the team travels to Cleveland to face the Browns on Sunday. 

"Opportunities, especially in the NFL, come very few times, unfortunately," Boyle said. "But that’s the beauty of the NFL, it’s so competitive. It’s been a long journey. Just kind of reminiscing on my story, starting football when I was six years old, and here I am as a 27-year-old and still blessed to have this opportunity."

Goff suffered the injury in the first quarter of last Sunday's game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Detroit News reports he spent the past two days resting in hopes of getting medically cleared. He arrived at the facility feeling good Friday and it was decided to keep him sidelined — the official injury report lists Goff as doubtful to participate in the matchup on Sunday.

Boyle was an undrafted rookie in 2018 out of Eastern Kentucky University and was signed by the Packers — he played sparingly in Green Bay the last two seasons, attempting just four passes. NFL.com reports that Boyle has been sidelined with a broken thumb he sustained in the Lions' last preseason game against the Indianapolis Colts.

Lions head coach Dan Campbell has expressed concern with Goff's play, but also with his offensive line's pass protection, and has stuck with Goff as a starter. With Goff behind center, the Lions have struggled to an 0-8-1 record and remain the NFL's only winless team.

The Lions (0-8-1) travel to face the Browns (5-5) for Sunday's Week 11 matchup in Cleveland — the game will air on FOX and is scheduled to kick off at 1 p.m. ET.
