Romeo Crennel, Wade Phillips Could Be Old Dogs Teaching Young Coaches New Tricks

The NFL has become a league of opportunities. Teams are all about trying new and innovative things to land the next great head coach. College coaches are being brought up and given opportunities, and so are coaches with little to no experience.

It's a strategy that has been hit or miss, but there's one way to give your team a better chance at success. If you're going to bring in the young, inexperienced guns, you've got to bring experience with him. Someone who has been there before, and can act as that trusted guide.

Matty Breisch with Section 215 recently brought that idea up in an article. For his example, he used the Philadelphia Eagles looking at options such as Duce Staley, Jerod Mayo, Joe Brady or Lincoln Riley. Of those, only Riley has head coaching experience, but he's also from the college ranks.

The others are familiar with the NFL, but have no head coaching experience -- and very limited coordinator experience. In order to combat, Breisch suggests the Eagles bring an experienced guy like Romeo Crennel in as a defensive coordinator.

Not a bad idea considering his vast experiences in varying capacities. This is a man that has been in this league for what seems like ages, and he knows it like the back of his hand. That can be extremely valuable to any young coach getting his first opportunity.

To take that a step further, another experienced coach is looking for a comeback. Wade Phillips, former head coach and defensive coordinator for multiple teams, announced via Twitter on Friday his decision to return.

Phillips is another guy who could help a young coach who is still developing winning habits. And as Chris Roling with Bengals Wire recently pointed out, even a team like Cincinnati with a second-year head coach could use that guidance.

The new age is taking risks with new NFL head coaches. The right formula, however, is matching that new coach with a strong, experienced coordinator. In some instances, that was always the goal. But there are at least two candidates who can act as a final piece to a rebuilding puzzle.

Let's see where they end up. If that's in a scenario like the Bengals and Eagles, then other teams should play close attention to the success it yields.
