Report: Jaguars Don't Want To Pay Urban Meyer Remainder Of Contract After Firing Him For Cause

The Jacksonville Jaguars have no intention of paying Urban Meyer another dollar.

The team fired Meyer for cause with the intention of not paying him the remaining four years of his contract, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports.

The Jaguars fired Meyer on Wednesday evening after just 13 games. But Meyer's short tenure with the team was not without a series of embarrassing events.

Meyer was hired by the team on Jan. 14 and officially announced as the team's new head coach on Jan. 15.

Meyer's coaching staff announcements became top headlines when he announced — and defended — the hiring of strength and conditioning coach Chris Doyle on Feb. 11. Meyer said at the time that Doyle had been "vetted thoroughly" and promoted his relationship with his former Big Ten rival to try to win over the public, but it didn't work. Doyle resigned a day later.

In March, Meyer had nothing positive to say about his adjustment or use of the NFL's free agency period. He called the process "awful" and said the legal tampering period should be changed, Yahoo Sports reports.

While he won a lot of people over in April with the No. 1 overall pick of Trevor Lawrence in the draft, Meyer's questionable choices in later picks of the first round had people asking questions.

The month of May doesn't need much explanation: Tim Tebow is signed as a tight end.

In July, Yahoo Sports reports that Meyer received his first NFL fines. He was personally fined $100,000 after reportedly violating non-contact rules during team OTAs, specifically in 11-on-11 drills between wide receivers and defensive backs.

Tebow was cut in August after a single preseason game.

At the end of August, the NFL Players Association announced it opened an investigation into Meyer for saying he considered a player's vaccination status when making roster cuts.

In October, the winless Jaguars fly back to Florida without their head coach, who stayed in Ohio and was caught on video in a bar with a young woman grinding in his lap. A day later, the team's owner Shad Khan released a statement reprimanding Meyer for his "inexcusable" conduct and saying the coach must earn back the organization's trust

Meyer was reported to have multiple intense run-ins with the Jaguars’ players and coaches, calling them “losers,” but Meyer denied those claims.

While there are surely more events not touched on here, Khan still elected to fire the coach midway through Meyer's first year with the franchise.

The team owner said his decision to fire Meyer wasn’t in response to Lambo’s allegations, though.

Ultimately, Meyer went just 2–11 during his tenure as the Jaguars’ coach, and his 13-game stint with the franchise was filled with plenty of drama.
