Raiders Shopping OT Trent Brown
Could the Las Vegas Raiders be shopping offensive tackle Trent Brown this offseason?
With few available tackles in free agency and a $14 million cap hit attached to his name, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport said the Raiders have had talks about potentially dealing the high-earning offensive tackle.
Raiders general manager Mike Mayock declined Wednesday to commit Brown to the Raiders' roster for the upcoming season, Around the NFL reports.
"If Trent is in shape and stays committed, there's not a better right tackle out there," Maycock said, per ESPN's Paul Gutierrez.
Maycock said "the jury is still out" on Brown, as he's under contract.
"We believe in the talent of that player," Maycock said. "There would be nothing finer than having Trent Brown protecting Derek Carr in the season opener. But the jury is still out."
If the Raiders were to keep Brown on the roster, his contract would account for a $14 million cap hit in 2021, which comes in second to Carr's $22 million, Around the NFL reports.
Brown was selected by the San Francisco 49ers in the seventh round of the 2015 NFL Draft. The New England Patriots acquired him through a trade in 2018, and he was signed by the Raiders as an unrestricted free agent a year later.
In 2019, he inked a four-year, $66 million deal — $36.75 million guaranteed — as a free agent, making him the NFL's highest-paid lineman at the time.
Brown played in just five games in 2020 due to conditioning issues, injuries and repeated COVID-19 list designations, NFL reports. The 27-year-old tackle was limited to 11 games his first year with the Raiders due to injuries but still managed to earn a Pro Bowl nod.
Brown is not due any guaranteed compensation over the next two seasons, but he does have two years left on his contract, Around the NFL reports.
To shop or move the former Florida Gator, the Raiders would likely need to restructure his contract — the Raiders could also cut the tackle, allowing him to choose his next team.
