Raiders Owner Mark Davis Takes Responsibility for 'I Can Breathe' Tweet Following Derek Chauvin Verdict

On Tuesday, former police officer Derek Chauvin was found guilty of all charges related to the death of George Floyd. A lot of reactions on social media soon followed, including from the Las Vegas Raiders.

Let's just say the team's tweet created some controversy.

The Raiders posted a tweet that read "I can breathe" soon after the news, which incited a wave of criticism from people all over social media, and many were left wondering how that post was even approved.

OutKick founder Clay Travis had some questions of his own about how this situation unfolded. It turns out, team owner Mark Davis has taken responsibility for the tweet.

“That’s my tweet,” owner Mark Davis said, via the Las Vegas Review-Journal. “I don’t want anyone in the organization taking heat. I take full responsibility for that.

“I was driving home from a meeting when the verdict came in. Soon after, I was listening to George Floyd’s brother, Philonise, speak. And he said, ‘Today, we are able to breathe again.’ I took my lead from him. In my mind, that was all I needed to say, ‘I can breathe.'”

Clay isn't buying it though.

Davis is standing by the tweet. He acknowledges that some people may view the tweet as tone deaf since George Floyd died from an inability to breathe, but the Raiders will not be deleting it. To be fair, deleting it wouldn't do much to improve perception at this point.

In hindsight, there were probably better options for a social media post.
