Raiders Fire General Manager Mike Mayock After Three Seasons, 25-24 Record
A win over the Bengals in the AFC Wild Card Saturday would have gone a long way in saving the job of Raiders general manager Mike Mayock.
Referee blunders aside, the scoreboard read 26-19 in favor of the Bengals. And with that, Las Vegas' hopes of getting its first playoff win since 2003 were dashed. It also cost Mayock his job, as NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports that Mayock was notified Monday that he will not be retained.
The report comes less than an hour after Rapoport reported that the Raiders had requested to interview Patriots defensive assistant Jerod Mayo and de facto general manager Dave Ziegler for their head coach and general manager positions. Bisaccia still remains the interim head coach as of now.
"We have relieved Mike Mayock of his duties as General Manager of the Las Vegas Raiders," the Raiders said in a statement, via MMQB's Albert Breer. "We thank Mike for his contributions over the last three years in helping to form the foundation for the franchise to build upon in its future."
The Raiders went 25-24 during Mayock's tenure, but his first-round pick selections were all seen as reaches. Mayock drafted defensive end Clelin Ferrell with the fourth-overall pick in 2019. Ferrell has 8.0 sacks in 42 games.
Mayock followed that up with drafting Damon Arnette in 2020 (19th overall) and Alex Leatherwood in 2021 (17th overall). Arnette was released midway through this season after making death threats and posing with guns on an Instagram live. Leatherwood wrapped up his rookie campaign allowing the fourth-highest pressure rate among offensive tackles, per PFF (9.2%).
Mayo, the former All-Pro linebacker, has become a hot commodity on the head coaching market this offseason. The 35-year-old is scheduled to interview with the Broncos this week, while the Texans and now Raiders appear to be next.
Ziegler is wrapping up his ninth season in the Patriots' scouting department and his first as director of player personnel. He previously spent three seasons in the Broncos' scouting department before joining New England.
It's unclear whether Bisaccia would remain on the new head coach's staff or if the 61-year-old would garner his own head coaching interest.
