Odd Timing: Washington Football Team To Retire Sean Taylor's Number

The Washington Football Team and Flint Tropics' public relations departments apparently studied at the same institution. Rather than address more than half a million potentially damning emails, the WFT has instead opted to create an illusion that all is well in the nation's capital -- their own version of wrestling a bear at halftime.

On Thursday morning, the team announced they will officially retire No. 21 in honor of the late Sean Taylor. The move is Washington's way of essentially parking a shiny new car in the driveway of a house that is in the midst of burning to the ground.

Taylor's jersey retirement, which is certainly warranted, is scheduled for halftime of Sunday's game against Kansas City. Interesting enough, there had been no previous mention of Taylor's jersey retirement prior to Thursday's press release from the team, which came less than a week after the Jon Gruden emails heard 'round the world came to light.

More than 650,000 emails were vetted by the NFL as part of an investigation into the Washington Football Team's "toxic" workplace. Yet, somehow, only Gruden's poor choice of words were exposed, leaving fans, players, media members, cheerleaders, and others demanding more transparency.

Rather than transparency, accountability or even acknowledgement, Washington chose the Jackie Moon-route of distraction, a Sean Taylor announcement that's about as well timed as a fart in church.

For decades, the Washington franchise has referred to the team's offensive linemen as "the hogs." Coincidentally, they're now trying to save their bacon by putting lipstick on a pig.
