New York Giants Hire Bills Assistant Joe Schoen As Latest GM
Big Blue hopes to usher in a new era of improved results behind their latest general manager: Buffalo Bills assistant Joe Schoen.
The New York Giants announced their official hiring of Schoen as GM on Friday, filling in the void left by Dave Gettleman when he retired at the end of the 2021-22 season.
Fans have anticipated a change in the role after going 19-46 with Gettleman for the past four seasons and watching a catatonic offense and defense take the field on Sundays despite housing multiple lottery picks.
In 2008, after working with the Panther's scouting unit for seven seasons, Schoen joined the Miami Dolphins' scouting department. Schoen was eventually bumped up to the Dolphins' assistant director for college scouting in 2013 before joining the Buffalo Bills as assistant to GM Brandon Beane in 2017.
Voicing his support for Schoen was legendary Giants coach Bill Parcells — lauding the 42-year-old's acuity, ready to service a regressing Giants organization.
“I like Joe. Having worked with him, I think he’s a very good evaluator of talent in the NFL, and he’s a serious personnel man," Parcells commented on the new hire via the New York Post. "He’s very, very conscientious.”
Schoen will be off to a fast start as GM: aiding in the search for the Giants' new head coach, post-Joe Judge, and managing two top-10 picks in this year's NFL Draft.
The Giants (4-13) are equipped with both the fifth and seventh pick in the 2022 draft, gaining the second selection via trade with Chicago when the Bears shot up in the 2021 draft to pick Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields 11th overall.
Schoen's connection to Buffalo has entertained fans with the potential for current Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll to join the Giants as head coach and help the GM rehab a team that has devolved into the lowest echelon of NFL franchises since winning their last Super Bowl a decade ago.
