Melvin Gordon Cited For DUI, What It Means For Broncos
Broncos running back Melvin Gordon has been cited for driving under the influence and ticketed for speeding, according to the Denver Police Department.
Documents obtained by Mike Klis with 9News revealed the free agent pickup for Denver was caught speeding "between 25 mph and 39 mph over the limit at 5th Avenue and Speer Boulevard." His arraignment will be held on Friday, Nov. 13 at the Denver Court House.
When asked for a comment, the team released the following statement:
The game against New England was postponed this past weekend due to a COVID-19 outbreak with the Patriots. This one-week delay gave Denver players some unexpected time off .
Now it's unclear whether the Broncos will have their starting running back for Monday night's game. The team is expected to leave for New England the same day as Gordon's arraignment.
So, what does this mean for Denver's backfield if Gordon does not travel with the team?
Well, the good news is backup running back Phillip Lindsay is expected to return against the Patriots after missing multiple weeks due to a toe injury. He is a guy who came off back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons heading into 2020.
Considering the Patriots have been pedestrian at stopping the run this season, the Broncos could have some success with Lindsay as the starter and Royce Freeman returning to the number two slot. Freeman has totaled 1,017 yards and eight rushing touchdowns over the last two seasons. He's also added 328 receiving yards and another score.
There is also former Old Dominion running back Jeremy Cox on the practice squad.
That group could be good enough for the Broncos to get by while waiting on any potential disciplinary action on Gordon, which could come at any time.
