Lions To Dump Veteran Backup QB Chase Daniel, DT Danny Shelton

Another quarterback is headed for the open market, as the Detroit Lions are set to release veteran backup quarterback Chase Daniel.

The Lions looked for a team that might want to make a trade for Daniel, but couldn't find any teams that had interest.

Last season, Daniel appeared in four games, going 29-for-43 passing for 264 yards, a score and two picks.

Daniel has been in the league for the last 11 seasons, playing for the Saints, Chiefs, Bears, Eagles and Lions.

The QB had two years left on the three-year, $13.05 million deal signed last season. By releasing him, Detroit will save $2.3 million on the salary cap with $3 million in dead money.

Another Lions player being shown the door to save money is defensive tackle Danny Shelton. The move to get rid of Shelton saves the club $4 million on the cap, with $1.25 million in dead money.

The 27-year-old Shelton played in 12 games for the Lions in 2020, putting up 37 tackles along with one sack.

Shelton was a former first-round pick of the Cleveland Browns, where he played for three seasons before he inked with the New England Patriots.

After two years in New England, Shelton inked a deal with the Lions for two years and $8 million in March 2020.
